Today, our zoo experienced a heartbreaking emergency involving Nigaba, our 19-year-old western lowland gorilla.
At approximately 1:42 p.m. a young visitor entered a restricted area and fell into the gorilla habitat. Zoo staff immediately activated our dangerous-animal emergency procedures and worked to secure the area.
Nigaba approached the child while our response team assessed the situation. As conditions inside the habitat became increasingly unpredictable, the team determined that the child faced an immediate risk of serious injury. Our emergency response staff made the extraordinarily difficult decision to use lethal force against Nigaba.
The child was recovered from the enclosure and transported to a local hospital. We understand that the child is in stable condition.
Nigaba had been part of our zoo family for more than sixteen years. He was known by his keepers for his intelligence, curiosity, and distinctive personality, and his loss is devastating to everyone who cared for him.
We know that many members of our community will have questions about what occurred today.
A full investigation into the incident, including how the visitor gained access to the restricted area, is already underway. We will share additional verified information when it becomes available.
For the safety and privacy of those involved, we ask visitors not to speculate about the child or their family.
The gorilla habitat will remain closed until further notice.
